Xu Chenghong feared his wedding would have very few guests, so he invited people to attend through social media. Around 30,000 people ultimately joined the celebration in Yiliang County, China, according to local reports and content creator Ur.Chinese.Unc.

Chenghong said he had few relatives who could come, apart from his older brother, and had saved 167,500 RMB for the wedding. After he posted his invitation, viewers said they would attend. Around 10,000 people reportedly arrived in the days before the ceremony.

Guests travelled from different parts of China, including Hong Kong, Sichuan and Chongqing. Some brought gifts such as live ducks, cows, apples, household appliances and a used car. More than 40 chefs also travelled to help prepare food for the crowd.

The gathering on October 31 was described in local coverage as possibly “China’s biggest ever wedding.” The large turnout left hotels without enough rooms, while local businesses reportedly benefited as some visitors stayed for several days. Guests later cleaned the town square where the event had taken place.
