Cryptocurrency giant Binance has officially responded to a massive security incident that impacted assets worth approximately $6.3 billion, marking it as the largest crypto theft on record. Following the attack on October 29, the exchange temporarily froze all transactions and announced its commitment to covering every loss incurred by users during the breach.
In an official statement, Binance confirmed they are working non-stop to resolve the issue while coordinating with law enforcement. As a precautionary measure, all deposits and withdrawals have been suspended to allow the security team to conduct checks and freeze funds. The platform emphasized that users should rely solely on official channels for updates and promised a full post-mortem report once the investigation is complete.
Initial reports suggested the security incident may have stemmed from a single compromised laptop belonging to an employee. However, Binance clarified that subsequent investigations revealed additional points of breach beyond the device. Co-CEO Richard Teng described the event as a complex attack process rather than a simple one-click action, noting that there is currently no evidence of any wallet private key leaks.
While Binance focuses on internal recovery, other industry platforms have identified a North Korean-linked group known as TraderTraitor, also referred to as the Lazarus Group, as the likely perpetrator. This same group was responsible for a $1.5 billion attack on Bybit in 2025, an incident now massively eclipsed by the current breach. The response has become an industry-wide effort, with other platforms moving to freeze assets related to the stolen funds.
Despite some reports suggesting that around $6 billion had already been transferred out, Binance maintains that user funds are safe and aims to resume withdrawals within the next 48 hours. Experts have warned that recovering the affected funds will be difficult and may take considerable time to track down.
