WWE star Danhausen has rejected claims that he trademarked his signature facepaint to take legal action against Magic: The Gathering. The speculation followed the resurfacing of a 2025 interview in which he discussed the makeup’s resemblance to a card design.
In the interview on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Danhausen said he was already wearing his distinctive black-and-white facepaint when he saw a Magic: The Gathering card with a similar look. The card was identified in the repost as Juri, Master of the Revue.
Some fans interpreted the clip as Danhausen accusing Wizards of the Coast of copying his character. He responded on X, saying the trademark was not intended to let him sue people at will, but to prevent others from making claims against him. He also replied to a fan that he loves Magic.
The trademark was filed in 2020 under Danhausen’s real name, Donovan Danhausen. The filing describes a stylized face used in connection with merchandise and wrestling entertainment. In the original interview, he said his makeup was inspired by the demon Pazuzu from The Exorcist and claimed he was the first wrestler to trademark his facepaint. He also said Sting later worked with the same attorney to protect his own look.
The clarification came during a busy week for Danhausen, who hosted a WWE YouTube special and NXT Halloween Havoc, and appeared in a Danhausen-themed episode of SmackDown.
