Nathan Johnson, a Texas senator and former composer for Dragon Ball Z, has been elected Texas attorney general. He defeated Republican Mayes Middleton in the November 3 election, ending a 32-year stretch without a Democrat winning the office. Dan Morales was the last Democrat elected attorney general, in 1994.

Johnson has served in the Texas Senate since 2019. He is due to take office in January 2027, replacing outgoing Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Before his political career, Johnson composed music for Funimation’s English dub of Dragon Ball Z, including the first 67 episodes of the 2005 Ultimate Uncut edition. He also contributed music to five films in the franchise, among them Broly: Second Coming, Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon.

In a 2012 interview with The Dao of Dragon Ball, Johnson said he had not watched the anime before being hired and initially found it difficult to connect with its characters and story. He later came to appreciate the series, particularly Gohan and the character’s relationship with his father, which resonated with Johnson as a parent.

Johnson’s anime background also became part of his public identity during his first Texas Senate campaign in 2018. After that election, he told The Dao of Dragon Ball that younger voters were excited when they learned about his music work on Dragon Ball Z. In a 2017 interview, he said the series’ themes of unlikely allies working together reflected his political philosophy.
