A viral video appearing to show fitness influencer Goob being arrested was staged to promote a charity food giveaway, according to the Suffolk County Police Department. A department spokesperson told TMZ that John Dorsey was never taken into custody.

The video drew attention after fellow fitness influencer Joey Swoll shared footage of Dorsey apparently being escorted by police, with the caption, “Welcome to the show John.” Swoll said he did not have all the facts but urged Dorsey to “do better.”

Dorsey later asked followers for “privacy and grace” as speculation spread, and shared what appeared to be a letter from an attorney warning of possible criminal charges. He also insisted that the video was not a skit.

Police said the footage was made while filming social media posts for a charity food giveaway taking place later in the month. Dorsey’s Instagram reel asked viewers to watch until the end and tagged the Suffolk County Police Department, HummusFit and GymKatie.

Swoll subsequently shared a follow-up video, while Dorsey posted another reel directing viewers to watch through to the end. Dorsey has previously used elaborate holiday skits to promote charity food giveaways.
