YouTuber JaackMaate and his Happy Hour podcast co-hosts are organising their own Christmas event in Norwich after the city council removed him from its official lights switch-on. The group’s plans for November 19 include a lights switch-on, a party and a charity comedy show.
JaackMaate, whose real name is Jack Dean, had been invited to switch on Norwich’s Christmas lights alongside co-hosts Stevie White and Robbie Knox. The 33-year-old was dropped from the event after a complaint about “edgy” videos he made in 2014. Norwich City Council apologised for not identifying concerns about the content before inviting him.
In a video announcing the alternative plans, Dean said the group was disappointed partly because listeners had already booked hotels and train tickets to attend. The trio plan to visit locations around Norwich before finishing at the Murderers pub, where they will switch on its Christmas lights and hold a party for fans.
They have also announced a one-off live performance at The Lanes Comedy Club to raise money for Mind the Gap, the Lord Mayor’s Civic Charity. Further details are to come. The group invited independent businesses, community projects and charities in Norwich to contact them about switching on their Christmas lights.
The council’s official Christmas lights event remains scheduled for November 19, but Dean will no longer take part. The Happy Hour team encouraged fans to visit Norwich for their alternative celebration.
