Nearly three decades after its Nintendo 64 debut, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has received a new remake for Switch 2. The updated version preserves the story of Link’s quest to stop Ganondorf while adding visual changes and gameplay improvements intended to make the classic feel more accessible.
The story follows Link as he joins Princess Zelda in trying to prevent Ganondorf from claiming the Triforce. Link must obtain the Master Sword and travel through time to awaken the Seven Sages, whose power is needed to save Hyrule.
Among the remake’s most notable changes are dedicated buttons for running and jumping. The review says these additions give players more freedom while exploring, though jumping is not automatic. A quest-tracking feature called Threads of Time also helps keep track of tasks, including the Happy Mask Salesman requests and the lengthy Biggoron’s Sword quest.
Players can use the Switch 2 microphone to activate ocarina songs by humming, singing or playing a real ocarina. Gyro controls can be used to aim the bow and ranged equipment such as the Hookshot. The remake also introduces a Hall of Fallen Foes boss-rush mode.
Combat has been adjusted with feedback from the Switch 2 controller’s HD rumble, while some enemies react more actively during fights. Boss encounters feature updated arenas, attacks and animations. The review describes Ganon’s final form as a particularly striking example of the visual changes.
The remake substantially updates Hyrule’s environments, from the foliage and streams of Kokiri Forest to the grass and wildflowers of Hyrule Field. Towns and dungeons also include more environmental detail, lighting effects and atmospheric elements. Characters have received updated models and outfits, and most characters other than Link and minor NPCs are voiced, adding new dialogue to scenes involving the Seven Sages and other figures.
The review concludes that the remake retains the familiar adventure while refreshing its presentation and controls. It describes the Switch 2 version as a definitive way to revisit Ocarina of Time, whether players are returning to Hyrule or discovering the game for the first time.
