Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller has not ruled out the return of PvE story content, although a campaign matching the original vision for Overwatch 2 would be a major undertaking.

When Overwatch 2 was announced in 2019, Blizzard presented PvE as a central feature, promising a story campaign, replayable Hero Missions and talent trees. Those plans were later scaled back. Blizzard canceled Hero Mode in 2023, and only three story missions were released as part of the Invasion update.

According to Keller, earlier PvE content, including the Archives events and story missions, generated interest but did not retain players as effectively as Blizzard had hoped. He said the missions helped move Overwatch’s story forward, but “didn’t really get played the way that we wanted it to.”

The director also explained that PvE missions require substantial development time and resources. Those resources could instead support cinematics, comics and other storytelling formats while allowing the team to remain focused on Overwatch’s competitive multiplayer.

Even so, Keller said he would “never discount” the possibility of bringing PvE back. Smaller story experiences could remain feasible if they do not significantly divert resources from the core game.

A full-scale campaign would be different. Keller indicated that recreating the larger PvE experience originally envisioned for Overwatch 2 could require a separate development team working on “a whole new game.” There is currently no indication that Blizzard is developing another PvE campaign or a standalone Overwatch title.

Keller has previously acknowledged shortcomings in Overwatch’s story and lore, while Blizzard has also explained that changes to its development tools prevented the original Archives missions from simply returning. The possibility of future playable story content therefore remains open, but no specific project has been announced.

Beyond games, the Overwatch universe could also continue through other formats. Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2026 that a Diablo Netflix series was coming and indicated that discussions were underway about bringing Overwatch to television as well.
