Reddit is testing additional advertising placements in its search results, where users may see sponsored products related to what they are looking for. The company announced the experiment on November 3 and said it involves a select group of eligible advertisers.

The ads may be influenced by several factors, including how relevant a product is to a user’s search. For example, someone searching for home-office advice could see promotions for desks, monitors or office chairs. A search about setting up a coffee station might bring up coffee machines, beans or mugs.

Reddit says the test is intended to reach people who are already researching products or considering a purchase. The company will assess how users respond before deciding how to refine the experience for both users and advertisers.

Reddit already displays ads across its platform; this trial adds placements to search pages, where sponsored products could appear alongside results for posts or communities. The company has not said how long the test will run, how many users will see the ads or whether the feature will eventually be made available more widely.
