An employee of Sakana Sushi Bar & Grill in Hoover, Alabama, was fired after being identified in a video showing two women taking almost an entire bowl of Halloween candy intended for trick-or-treaters. The footage was shared on Facebook and showed the women taking handfuls from a bucket outside a home, leaving very little behind.
One of the women wore a shirt displaying the restaurant’s logo. The person who posted the video criticized the adults for taking nearly all the candy and tagged Sakana to ask whether one of them worked there.
The restaurant said it was aware of the video and was investigating the incident. In a Facebook statement, Sakana said it did not condone behavior that took candy away from children or negatively affected the community, adding that it would respond appropriately if someone connected to the business was involved.
According to AL.com, the restaurant later confirmed that the woman taking the candy was an off-duty employee. A spokesperson initially said she had returned the candy and apologized to the homeowner, Taylor Wilson, on Sunday morning. Wilson disputed that version, saying the apology had come from the other woman shown in the video.
After investigating the discrepancy, Sakana said it confirmed that the employee had lied about apologizing. The restaurant then ended her employment, citing the seriousness of the incident and the false account given to the business.
