The UK Government intends to restrict in-game voice chat for players under 16 as part of a wider social media ban expected to take effect in spring. The proposal would target communication with strangers while allowing players to continue being paired with them in games.
Online Safety Minister Ian Murray outlined the planned measures during a parliamentary debate on November 2. He said the government would introduce regulations covering features including communication with strangers, describing this as a major concern with Roblox and other issues raised by MPs.
The proposal has drawn objections from Gamer’s Voice. Spokesperson Tom Shannon argued that gaming is not simply another kind of social media, and that joining guilds, cooperating with a team and making friends through a shared interest can be positive experiences for young people.
According to Gamer’s Voice, the plans would require gamers to verify their age before accessing communication features. Age checks are already used in some games and platforms, but the source notes that users have found ways around them.
The restrictions have been under consideration since May, and games such as Roblox have introduced safety features ahead of the expected changes. The plans form part of the UK’s under-16 social media restrictions, which are similar to measures introduced in Australia.
