David Morales, a 28-year-old Democrat and Rhode Island state representative, has been elected mayor of Providence. He defeated Republican Dave Talan in the November 3 election, winning approximately 81% of the vote to Talan’s 17%, according to the original report. Morales is set to take office in January 2027 and will be the youngest mayor in the city’s history, Rhode Island Current reported.
Outside politics, Morales wrestles in the Renegade Wrestling Alliance as “The Commissioner,” an arrogant political authority figure. He has competed with the Rhode Island promotion since 2021 and won its Hype Championship three times. One of his character’s fictional rules required the champion to carry the title belt everywhere, including the statehouse.
In an October 2025 interview with Ocean State Media, Morales described common ground between wrestling and politics, pointing to showmanship, theater, athleticism, drama and humor. He has also warned that politicians borrowing too heavily from professional wrestling’s exaggerated promos could contribute to extremist rhetoric.
His wrestling persona featured in the campaign. The Boston Globe reported that political opponents circulated materials showing Morales in wrestling gear and accusing him of being “all hype, no results.”
Morales announced that he was semi-retiring from wrestling while campaigning for mayor, but has left open the possibility of returning to the ring. “Never say never in the world of professional wrestling,” he said.
