Spotify is reportedly considering a paid add-on that would allow subscribers to remix songs and create AI-generated covers of popular tracks. According to The Financial Times, the feature could cost around $4 to $5 in addition to a standard Premium subscription and may launch in early 2027.
The tool would let users create their own versions of songs, such as transforming a country track into a more upbeat dance version. These remixes could potentially be uploaded to Spotify and included in playlists.
Under the reported plan, plays and royalties from a remix would be credited to the artist whose original track was used. Artists who do not want their music involved with the AI feature would reportedly be able to opt out.
The proposal comes as Spotify faces a growing volume of AI-generated music on its platform. Some songs have been uploaded to the profiles of deceased artists, while the emergence of AI performers has made it more difficult to distinguish between real and synthetic music.
Spotify has reportedly been developing the feature for some time. In May, the streaming service reached an agreement with Universal Music allowing its tracks to be used. The company has previously offered tools for generating playlists through AI prompts, but a remixing feature would represent a broader use of artificial intelligence on the platform.
The plans could also raise questions about how AI-assisted tracks would be identified. Spotify already uses verified tags to distinguish real artists from AI-generated ones, although it remains unclear how those labels would apply to user-created remixes.
